The Democratic Republic of East Timor is a state located on the island of Timor (South-East Asia), it is the largest island among the Lesser Sunda Islands. The country's area is approximately 14,874 square kilometers, which is about 15% of the island's area. The form of government is a presidential republic. The capital of the state is the city of Dili. The country has a tropical climate with high humidity and seasonal rains. East Timor has a population of 1,397,099 (2022). The official languages are Portuguese and Tetum, many speak English and Indonesian. The country is known for its history of fighting for independence from Indonesia, which was declared in 2002. East Timor is also one of the youngest and poorest countries in Asia, although it has recently begun to attract foreign investors in the oil, gas and tourism industries.
