The Republic of Haiti is an island nation located on the island of Haiti in the Caribbean Sea, bordered to the east by the Dominican Republic. The form of government is a semi-presidential republic. The president of the country is the head of state and government. The capital is Port-au-Prince. The climate is tropical and rainy and dry seasons characterize this area. The population is 11,806,440 people (2022). The official language is French. There is also a Creole language (Haitian Creole) that is widely used in practice. Living standards in Haiti are below average, and the country faces a number of social and economic problems. The medical and educational systems are at a low level. Security can be an issue, and the country sometimes experiences political and social tensions. Citizenship can be acquired through birth within the country if at least one parent is a Haitian citizen. Haiti is known for its cultural and historical significance and was also the birthplace of the Haitian Revolution, which led to the world's first successful slave revolt. Among the attractions are the Citadel Laferriere, a Catholic cathedral and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l’Assomption). Finding employment for foreigners in Haiti can be difficult given the country's economic problems and high unemployment.
