North Macedonia: How to Obtain a Residence Permit
North Macedonia rarely appears on the loud lists of "dream countries," but for many, this is precisely why it turns out to be unexpectedly convenient.
Let's explore real and practical ways to obtain a residence permit.
Employment If you have a contract with a Macedonian employer, you can apply for a residence permit based on employment. The process is not the fastest, but it is straightforward: the employer initiates the permit, then the residence permit follows. This is most common in the service, manufacturing, IT, and education sectors.
Business You can open a company and obtain a residence permit as a director or owner. It's better if the company is real, with activities, reporting, and taxes; zero activity is possible, but not favored.
Education Studying at universities or language schools provides grounds for a residence permit for the duration of your studies. This is a temporary status, but it is legal and often used as a first step.
Family Reunification If a close relative already has a residence permit or citizenship, you can apply for reunification. One of the most stable and straightforward options.
Long-term Residence A residence permit is not granted directly for purchasing property, but owning a home simplifies life: property is often seen as a plus when applying on other grounds.
Important! There are no "golden visas" or accelerated programs here.
Citizenship is only through naturalization, usually after 8 years of residence.
The country is welcoming, but bureaucracy exists. Everything is resolved slowly but predictably.
